1776 So-Called Dollar HK-862, Continental Currency Uniface
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
German-silver, the whitish alloy of copper, nickel and zinc, is the metal of HK-862, a uniface piece carrying only the Continental Currency design. Its one struck side copies the 1776 Continental dollar, whose original dies Elisha Gallaudet of New York engraved: sundial, rays and sun, "Fugio" and "Mind Your Business," inside the legend "Continental Currency." No reverse was struck. In "Thomas L. Elder: A Catalogue of His Tokens and Medals" (The Numismatist, 1980), Thomas K. DeLorey moved this whole family of Continental-related medals from Elder to Professor Dickeson, and he numbers the uniface pieces DeLorey 89. Hibler and Kappen list it in the group with the Confederation dollars, whose altar design comes from the 1778 forty-dollar note. Brass is HK-861, copper HK-862a and aluminum HK-862b. German-silver, 39 mm.
