Description

HK-854a is the 1962 white metal restrike of the Continental dollar, issued by Empire Coin Company, then owned by Q. David Bowers, which held Professor Dickeson's old copy dies. The pieces were struck in England by John Pinches & Sons, Ltd. Hibler and Kappen give two die markers for the Empire strikes: a small gouge in the denticles above the O of "Continental" and a diagonal scratch below its C. They are also thinner, about 2 1/2 mm against the 3 mm of Dickeson's own white metal piece of 1876, HK-854. Though the design carries the date 1776, nothing here was made in that year; the dies themselves are an 1876 copy of Elisha Gallaudet's work. Empire later sold the dies to Robert Bashlow, whose silver, goldine and bronze restrikes are HK-852a, HK-856a and HK-853a.
