Description

Professor Dickeson's copy of the Continental dollar was offered in a range of metals at the 1876 Centennial Exposition, and HK-854 is the white metal striking, 3 mm thick. That thickness matters, because the same dies were used again in 1962 for white metal restrikes (HK-854a) that run only about 2 1/2 mm, and Hibler and Kappen use the difference to tell the two apart. The obverse shows a sundial in a circle with the sun's rays from the upper left and "Mind Your Business" below; "Fugio" and the sun sit between that circle and an outer one, with "Continental Currency" and the date 1776 outside. The reverse chain names each of the thirteen states. The original 1776 coin was engraved by Elisha Gallaudet of New York. Dickeson's other metals are silver (HK-852), copper (HK-853), pewter (HK-855) and lead (HK-856).
