Description

Montroville Wilson Dickeson (1813-1882) trained as a physician but spent most of his life on antiquities and archeology, and in 1859 he published the American Numismatic Manual. For the 1876 Centennial Exposition he made struck copies of the Continental dollar to sell as souvenirs, and HK-852 is the silver striking from his dies, dated 1776 like the original and measuring 38 mm. Hibler and Kappen cite the dealer John W. Haseltine for the number made. The silver copy is told apart from the much later Bashlow silver restrike (HK-852a) by the reverse: Bashlow's pieces carry a small S, Dickeson's have none, and the Bashlow strikes are thinner. Thomas L. Elder acquired one or both of the Dickeson dies years afterward. Other metals from the dies are copper (HK-853), white metal (HK-854), pewter (HK-855) and lead (HK-856).
