Description

Betts-447 is another version of the Messenger of Peace medal from 1763, distinct from the gold version (PCGS #924946) in composition. The Messenger of Peace medals celebrate the diplomatic achievement of the Treaty of Paris, which ended the Seven Years' War and established British dominance over eastern North America. The treaty represented the culmination of decades of Anglo-French colonial competition, resolving territorial disputes that had generated warfare from King William's War (1689) through the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). The medal's design celebrates this resolution through allegorical imagery, presenting peace as a divine gift delivered to a war-weary world. The Messenger of Peace theme resonated strongly in 1763, when populations on both sides of the Atlantic were exhausted by years of conflict and eager to enjoy the prosperity that peace would bring to colonial trade and settlement.
