Description
This 1755 silver medal, Betts-392, commemorates Safety at Sea on the eve of the Seven Years' War. Anglo-French naval rivalry was intensifying throughout 1755, with both nations sending reinforcements to North America and clashing at sea even before formal declarations of war. The medal's maritime safety theme reflects the growing insecurity of Atlantic shipping lanes as the two colonial powers moved toward open conflict. Many Betts medals exist in multiple metal compositions struck from the same dies, as mints typically produced gold or silver presentations for dignitaries alongside bronze or copper versions for wider distribution. In June 1755, Vice Admiral Edward Boscawen attacked a French convoy carrying troops to Canada, capturing two ships and escalating the undeclared naval war that would soon engulf both European and colonial waters.
Rarity Notes
