Description

This 1760 gold medal (Betts-450) is the gold version of the Buenos Aires proclamation medal for Charles III, representing the highest tier of the colonial ceremonial hierarchy. Gold proclamation medals were produced in extremely small numbers — typically only a handful for the highest-ranking colonial officials, visiting dignitaries, and the royal treasury. The gold version of any proclamation medal is orders of magnitude scarcer than its silver counterpart, making this among the most valuable medals in the Betts series. The tradition of striking commemorative medals for New World events began with Spanish and Portuguese pieces in the sixteenth century, expanded through Dutch and French production in the seventeenth, and reached its peak with British issues during the colonial wars. The Buenos Aires gold proclamation medal combines the prestige of precious metal with the historical significance of documenting the transfer of sovereignty in one of South America's most important colonial cities.

Rarity Notes

Original 1760 gold. Gold proclamation medals are extremely rare. Among the most valuable medals in the Betts catalog.
