Description

Betts-506 is a cast silver medal from Vera Cruz (Veracruz), Mexico, produced in 1760 for the proclamation of Charles III. Cast medals, as opposed to struck medals, were produced by pouring molten metal into molds rather than pressing blank planchets between engraved dies. This technique was often used in provincial cities that lacked the specialized equipment for medal striking, and the cast surface gives these medals a distinctive texture different from struck pieces. Veracruz, as the principal port connecting New Spain with Europe, was one of the most important cities in colonial Mexico but did not have the Mexico City Mint's striking capabilities. Cast silver proclamation medals from provincial cities are scarce and prized for their provincial character, which distinguishes them from the more polished products of major mint facilities.
