Description
Betts-482 is a Mexico City medal from 1760, part of the extensive series produced in the viceregal capital for the proclamation of Charles III. Mexico City generated more proclamation medal varieties than any other city in the Spanish colonial world, reflecting its status as the largest, wealthiest, and most important city in the Americas. The medal's specific design within the Betts-482 designation distinguishes it from the other Mexico City issues (Betts-473 through 487), each produced by different sponsors or featuring different die designs. The proliferation of varieties resulted from the competitive nature of proclamation celebrations, where various civic, religious, military, and commercial bodies each commissioned their own medals as demonstrations of loyalty to the new monarch. This rich tradition makes Mexico City proclamation medals one of the most extensive and interesting sub-categories within the Betts catalog.
