Description
This bath metal medal, Betts-281, is an Admiral Vernon variety. The vast Vernon medal series, with over 200 documented varieties, represents the most extensive medallic commemoration of any single colonial military event. Betts cataloged these medals systematically, assigning numbers from approximately Betts-197 through Betts-340, covering the various campaigns and events associated with Vernon's Caribbean operations between 1739 and 1741. The series has been further cataloged by later scholars including W. Collectors have pursued Betts medals since the nineteenth century, when numismatists first recognized these pieces as a coherent body of historical documentation worthy of systematic study and cataloging. Coolidge Hills and Daniel Fearon, who have identified additional varieties and sub-varieties beyond those listed in Betts' original 1894 catalog.
