Description

Betts-314 is one of the extensive series of Admiral Vernon medals, the largest single group in the Betts catalog. Admiral Edward Vernon's capture of Porto Bello (Portobelo, Panama) in November 1739 with only six ships was one of the most celebrated British military victories of the eighteenth century and generated more commemorative medals than any other colonial-era event. This bronze (AE) variant, Betts-314, is one of over 150 distinct medal types produced to celebrate Vernon's exploits. The medals were produced privately in England, primarily in bath metal and copper, and sold to a patriotic public eager to celebrate British military success. Vernon medals vary enormously in design, quality, and inscriptions, creating a rich collecting field that has fascinated numismatists for centuries. The Admiral Vernon medal series documents the extraordinary public enthusiasm for colonial military victories in Georgian England.
