Description
This 1740 bronze medal, cataloged as Adams-Chao NLv 8-G, carries the highest obverse die number in the NLv subgroup, paired with reverse die G. The 8-G pairing represents one of the last die combinations produced in the No Location Vernon portrait series. The progression from NLv 1 through NLv 8 traces the evolution of Vernon's medallic portraiture as successive die sinkers interpreted his likeness, sometimes copying earlier medals and sometimes working from new portraits or engravings. Reverse die G features different naval or patriotic imagery than the earlier reverse dies in the series. Struck in copper alloy (AE) and dated 1740, this medal demonstrates the longevity of the Vernon medal craze. By mid-1740, Vernon was planning operations against Cartagena and other Spanish targets, and public enthusiasm for his campaigns remained high. The NLv 8-G variety's high die numbers suggest it appeared toward the end of the medal production cycle for this particular subgroup.
Rarity Notes
