Description
This 1739 bronze medal, cataloged as Adams-Chao NLv 2-B, features Vernon's portrait on the obverse without reference to a specific battle location. The NLv prefix denotes the "No Location, Vernon's Portrait" subgroup, where the obverse prominently displays a bust or half-length figure of the Admiral. Die pairing 2-B combines the second obverse die with the B reverse die in this classification. The reverse features patriotic symbols, naval trophies, or text celebrating Vernon's valor without depicting the Porto Bello fortifications or harbor map found on the PB-prefix varieties. Struck in copper alloy (AE) in England, this medal belongs to the wave of private propaganda pieces produced after Vernon's November 1739 capture of Porto Bello. British medalists produced Vernon portraits ranging from crude provincial work to finely engraved London products, reflecting the Admiral's status as the most celebrated military hero of his generation. The NLv varieties emphasize Vernon's personal heroism over the geographic specifics of his victory.
Rarity Notes
Scarce. NLv varieties are less common than the Porto Bello types but more available than the NLa political medals.
