Description
This 1739 medal (Betts-259) depicts both Admiral Vernon and Captain Edward Brown, commemorating their roles in the capture of Porto Bello. While Vernon commanded the naval squadron, Brown was among the officers who executed the assault. The "Vernon & Brown" combination is one of many die pairings in the extensive Admiral Vernon medal series, which features Vernon alone, Vernon with various subordinate officers, Vernon with maps and fortification plans, and other combinations. The sheer number of Vernon medal varieties — Betts catalogs well over a hundred — reflects both the enormous public enthusiasm for the victory and the commercial acumen of the private die sinkers who produced them. These medals were sold as patriotic souvenirs in the streets, taverns, and shops of London and the English provinces.
Rarity Notes
