1739 Bronze Medal Admiral Vernon, A-C PBvb 9-N Commodore Brown
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This 1739 bronze medal, cataloged as Adams-Chao PBvb 9-N, combines obverse die 9 with reverse die N. The high obverse die number places this among the later productions in the PBvb series. Reverse die N carries a specific combination of text and imagery commemorating the joint Vernon-Brown command. The Adams-Chao catalog meticulously tracks these die pairings because they reveal the relationships between different workshops and distribution networks in the eighteenth-century medal trade. A particular reverse die appearing with multiple obverses indicates it was available to more than one die sinker, through shared access or the sale of worn dies between workshops. Struck in copper alloy (AE), the PBvb 9-N medal is a product of the mature phase of Vernon medal production when die sinkers had established efficient workflows. The ninth obverse die shows continued innovation in portraiture even as the basic design concept ā Vernon and Brown facing ā remained consistent.
