Description

The 1739 Sou Marque is a French billon coin worth 24 deniers, struck at the Rouen mint (mint mark B) under the authority of Louis XV, the Well-Beloved (r. 1715-1774). An edict of October 1738 replaced the old 30-denier sous with this double sol of 24 deniers, which mid-eighteenth-century Canadians called the sol marqué. It shows two crowned L's and was struck in billon of about one part silver to three parts copper, from dies by Joseph-Charles Roettiers; CoinVarieties gives the standard as 2.18 grams at .250 fine. Shipments of these pieces to Canada are recorded for 1745 and for 1752-1753. Jambu finds that none was made for French America in particular: they were coins of the kingdom, sent to the colonies as needed.
