1721-B Nine Deniers

Coin Details
Description
The 1721 Nine Deniers is a small French colonial copper coin struck at the Rouen mint (mint mark B). A royal edict of June 1721 ordered a copper coinage for the colonies alone, and the Rouen (B) and La Rochelle (H) mints struck nine-denier pieces dated 1721 and 1722 on planchets brought from Sweden. The obverse legend reads SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTUM, and the reverse reads COLONIES FRANÇOISES with the date and mint letter. Jambu reports that Canada took only a few, and with distrust, while Louisiana accepted them and returned some to France a few years later; they were better received in the British colonies.
