Description

The 1713 Thirty Deniers, also known as a "Mousquetaire," is a French billon coin struck at the Lyon mint (mint mark D) under the authority of Louis XIV, the Sun King (r. 1643-1715). Royal edicts of September 26, 1709 and June 15, 1711 governed this billon thirty-denier piece, which the Metz (AA) and Lyon (D) mints struck from 1709 to 1713. The obverse shows two L's back to back under a crown between three lis; the reverse shows a cross with a lis in each angle and three bezants at the end of each arm, and collectors call the coin a mousquetaire because that cross recalls the one worn by the king's musketeers. CoinVarieties gives its standard as 2.44 grams of .208 fine silver, engraved by Norbert Roettiers. It is often collected with Canadian and colonial pieces, and some may have reached Canada, but most of these coins stayed in France. Numista describes the Lyon pieces as used in the rest of the kingdom and in the American colonies.
