Description
This London Elephant token is struck in brass rather than copper. The elephant tokens are English copper pieces named for the elephant on the obverse. The London pieces are undated and placed about 1694, while the versions for Carolina and New England carry the date 1694 in the reverse legend. Michael Hodder numbered the dies in the 1987 Norweb sale catalogue, and his numbers are cited with those of Breen and the Whitman encyclopedia (W-). This is Hodder 2-B struck in brass (Breen-189), and Heritage described the piece it sold as a unique brass impression.
