Description
This 1599 medal, Betts-19, dates from the final year of the sixteenth century amid escalating European competition for the Americas. Spain still dominated Central and South America but faced increasing challenges from England, France, and the Dutch Republic. The English Roanoke settlement had failed, while the Dutch were aggressively expanding maritime trade. This medal documents the complex geopolitical landscape just years before the founding of Jamestown (1607) and the Dutch East India Company (1602). Medal production technology evolved significantly during the Betts period, from the hand-engraved dies and screw presses of the sixteenth century to the more mechanized operations that became standard by the mid-eighteenth century. As one of the earliest pieces in the Betts catalog, it provides important context for understanding the numismatic record of European colonization during this transitional period.
Rarity Notes
Extremely rare. Late sixteenth-century medals with American connections are exceptionally scarce.
