Description

This 1580 medal, Betts-9, relates to Sir Francis Drake's circumnavigation of the globe (1577-1580), only the second such voyage after Magellan. Drake raided Spanish ports along the Americas' west coast, claimed Nova Albion (California) for England, and returned laden with treasure. Queen Elizabeth I knighted Drake aboard the Golden Hinde upon his return. The voyage established England as a serious maritime rival to Spain and foreshadowed the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. Colonial medals served multiple functions simultaneously: as propaganda tools promoting imperial policy, as diplomatic gifts establishing relationships with indigenous peoples and rival powers, and as commemorative art preserving historical memory. The medal documents one of the most consequential voyages of the Age of Exploration, an event that reshaped European power dynamics in the Western Hemisphere and opened new possibilities for English colonization of the Americas.

Rarity Notes
