Description
This 1596 silver medal, Betts-16, commemorates American commerce during the late sixteenth century when European trade networks were expanding into the Western Hemisphere. The medal reflects the growing economic importance of transatlantic trade routes connecting Europe with New World resources including precious metals, furs, and tobacco. By 1596, Spain's monopoly on New World trade was being challenged by English, Dutch, and French merchants and privateers, creating a complex web of legitimate commerce and piracy. Medallic commemoration of colonial events was not limited to military victories — treaties, explorations, trading company foundings, missionary activities, and colonial administrative milestones all received medallic recognition. This medal provides a rare numismatic window into the commercial motivations that drove European colonization, complementing the more common military and political themes on contemporary medals.
Rarity Notes
Very rare. Early commercial-themed medals are exceptionally scarce.
