DC's Aquaman, Batgirl, and The Flash Are Headed to U.S. Coins in 2027
The U.S. Mint's Comic Art Coin and Medal Program has its 2027 lineup, and the designs just took their first step toward approval. On 17 September 2026 the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) — one of the two federal panels that review U.S. coin and medal designs — considered the candidate artwork for Aquaman, Batgirl, and The Flash, the three DC Super Heroes slated for 2027.
What the Program Is
The Comic Art Coin and Medal Program is a U.S. Mint series celebrating the art of American comic books, produced in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery and its DC Comics characters. It launched in 2025 with Superman, followed by Batman and Wonder Woman. 2026 brings Green Lantern, Robin, and Supergirl; 2027 closes the planned nine-issue run with Aquaman, Batgirl, and The Flash. Each character gets a half-ounce $50 gold coin, a 2.5-ounce silver medal dated 2027, an undated one-ounce silver medal, and an undated clad medal about the size of a half dollar.
What the CFA Recommended for 2027
The Mint brings each program before both the CFA and the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) before the Director makes the final call, and Warner Bros. Discovery, as the series' industry liaison, states its own preferences. For the most part the CFA lined up with those preferences:
- Aquaman — recommended obverse #3 and reverse #1 (both the liaison's picks), with one note: the two faces of Aquaman, one on each side of the coin, should clearly read as the same person.
- Batgirl — recommended obverse #1 for its artistic merit and reverse #2, again matching the liaison.
- The Flash — here the panel broke from the liaison's first choice. It found The Flash's pose in the preferred obverse #3 too similar to the preferred reverse, so it recommended the liaison's second choice, obverse #1, paired with reverse #1.
What Happens Next
These are recommendations, not final designs — the Mint developed the artwork with Warner Bros. Discovery, and the Mint's Director will choose the final obverse and reverse for each character after weighing the CFA's and CCAC's input. Expect the finished 2027 designs to be unveiled closer to release.
The short version: three more DC heroes are coming to real U.S. gold and silver in 2027, the designs are taking shape, and — in a small but telling moment — the art reviewers pushed back on one of Warner Bros.' own picks for The Flash to keep the two sides of the coin from looking too alike.
