Welcome to NumisDex

NumisDex is a comprehensive, community-driven catalog of U.S. coin varieties, errors, and die characteristics. Our mission is to build the most complete and accessible reference for collectors, researchers, and dealers — a single destination where every known variety is documented with images, attribution data, and expert analysis.

What You'll Find Here

We currently catalog over 72,000 listings spanning the full range of U.S. coinage. Our hierarchical organization follows the structure collectors actually use: Denomination → Base Coin → Strike Type → Error/Variety. Browse by denomination through the catalog, search for specific varieties, or explore by error type.

Every listing in the catalog includes:

High-resolution obverse and reverse images
Attribution data from major references (Wexler, Fivaz-Stanton, CONECA, variety-specific catalogs)
Detailed descriptions of die characteristics and identifying features
Cross-references to NGC and PCGS census data where available
Community voting and verification status

How to Get Involved

NumisDex is built by collectors, for collectors. Here's how you can contribute:

Browse and Learn — Start by exploring the catalog. Whether you collect Lincoln Cents, Morgan Dollars, or anything in between, there's a wealth of attribution data waiting for you.

Submit New Varieties — Found something that's not in the catalog? Use the submission form to add new discoveries. Include clear photos and any attribution information you have — the community will help verify and classify your find.

Vote on Submissions — Every community submission goes through a voting process. Your expertise helps determine whether a submission is a genuine variety, needs more information, or should be reclassified. The more you participate, the more your vote carries weight through our tier progression system.

Join the Discussion — This forum is your space to discuss varieties, share discoveries, ask questions, and connect with fellow collectors. We have dedicated categories for every major series and error type.

NumisDex was built by a small team of coin enthusiasts and software developers who saw an opportunity to consolidate the scattered world of variety attribution into a single, modern platform. My primary passion in numismatics revolves around die varieties and mint errors. I love the thrill of cherrypicking these details out of everyday change, US Mint proof and mint sets, 3rd-party assembled sets, and even graded, holdered coins.

I’m a collector of ALL things Coins, Paper Money, Bullion & Exomumia related and/or themed. I love it all - but my passion is deeply imbedded in mint errors and die varieties! I also run live shows where I get to share this passion & collection with others. For me, it’s all about the history & stories, the uniqueness, the minting process(es), the and the excitement of the hunt. I am deeply committed to helping the fight the spread of misinformation in our hobby.

I look forward to experiencing what NumisDex has to offer and I'm excited to watch it continuously grow.

So happy to have you here. We have very similar interests. I am fully with you on the history aspect. When I first got into numismatics I saw how siloed the community is. My hope is to bring the error community together as most collectors I know don’t collect just a single error or coin type. I really look forward to what this grows into also.

Hello, happy to join this forum. I'm 79 years old and looking for something to keep me busy. Boy, did I ever choose the right hobby for that. I haven't settled yet on what my focus will be. Although I've collected off and on since I was a kid and put mt first penny into a green Whitman collection book, I never considered varieties and errors until just recently. I've scoured the internet trying to educate myself about this field and I've honestly found NumisDex to be the most compatible with my learning style. I'm blown away by the vast amount of information available here, especially the photos and examples along with the clear explanations accompanying each error code. Note: I'm a genealogist, and I've learned to fully appreciate the contributions of those who have gone before me with their dedication to accuracy, thoroughness, and compassion for their work. It is very encouraging to see the same attitude in play here. I hope that some day I can become learned enough to contribute back in some small way.

I will try my very best to follow all the guidelines and protocols, but I'm counting on the rest of you to steer me back onto the correct path. Just please be gentle with me!

So happy to have you here and you aren’t lying. The hobby is vast. I personally have started dabbling a bit into civil war tokens from close to my home town as a kid. I am a nuclear engineer by trade and we share a lot of the same values around information. My hope is that the community continues to banned together here. I have been collecting for 60+ years..... I previously was known on the PCGS discussion forums as "Longtimecollector"... My outstanding accomplishment as a collector would have to be the COMPLETION of a set of Seated Liberty Half Dollars by date & mint..... AND by die variety as listed in the old Wiley-Bugert Encyclopedia (To be honest, I WAS missing 8 of the varieties cataloged at that time..... I did own/operate a "brick & mortar" shop in LaPorte, IN for several years..... At one point about 10-15 years ago, I decided to sell off EVERYTHING !!!!!! Put it away, and when I retired, I had plenty to purchase a lake retreat in Northern Minnesota with about 30 acres amidst peaceful surroundings..... BUT, the collector in me just wouldn't let go, and I started to collect Civil War Tokens... After a few years of buying CWT's willy-nilly, I settled into a groove, and now I am primarily focused on CWT's from Wisconsin & Minnesota..... I LOVE to help people evaluate inherited collections, and give them an HONEST idea of value as I make NO attempt at buying any part of their holdings....
