Token F-200B-3A MI
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This Civil War token is cataloged as Fuld 200B-3A from Michigan. The third die combination in the Michigan 200B series continues the documentation of this obverse die's production history. Michigan's Upper Peninsula copper mines were among the nation's most productive during the Civil War era, creating a certain irony in the fact that the state experienced a shortage of copper cents even as it produced much of the raw copper from which federal cents were struck. Modern token production continues the American tradition of private metallic pieces for commercial and commemorative purposes, with contemporary technology enabling designs of greater complexity and precision. The copper composition of this token may well have been made from Michigan-mined copper, processed and returned to the state in the form of a private token rather than a federal coin.
