Description

This undated Civil War era store card, cataloged as Fuld 920H-3d, is a copper-nickel patriotic edition token issued by Chas. Goeldner of Wisconsin. Charles Goeldner was a Wisconsin merchant whose German surname reflects the significant German-American population in the Upper Midwest during the Civil War era. Wisconsin tokens are less commonly encountered than those from Ohio, New York, or Illinois, making them desirable for collectors assembling geographic sets. The copper-nickel composition gave this token the appearance of a federal cent, making it readily acceptable in commerce. Wisconsin's contribution to the Civil War token economy was modest compared to the major Eastern and Midwestern commercial centers, making each Wisconsin merchant's token a relatively scarce artifact of wartime commerce in the young state.
