Description
This undated Civil War era store card, cataloged as Fuld 630BB-4e, was issued by Monk's of New York. The white metal composition, indicated by the "e" suffix, typically consisted of a tin-lead alloy that gave the token a bright silvery appearance when new. Monk's was a New York City establishment whose name indicates a pub, restaurant, or similar hospitality business. White metal Civil War tokens are less common than copper or brass varieties because the softer alloy was more prone to wear and damage in circulation. The 630BB die designation places this among the New York City merchant series, one of the most extensively cataloged groups in Civil War token numismatics. New York's vibrant commercial culture produced an enormous variety of store cards advertising businesses of every description.
