Description
This undated copper Civil War store card cataloged as Fuld 600A-6a features a patriotic die (PE) issued by Cossitt Hill & Company of Tennessee. Tennessee Civil War store cards are among the rarest and most significant in the entire series, as Tennessee was a Confederate state where Union sympathizers faced genuine danger. East Tennessee was strongly Unionist, while Middle and West Tennessee generally supported the Confederacy, creating a deeply divided state. Cossitt Hill & Company's patriotic (Union) token from Tennessee represents an extraordinary act of political courage, as displaying Union sympathies in much of Tennessee could result in arrest, property confiscation, or violence. The 600A Fuld series places this in a Tennessee community, and the copper composition and patriotic die create a piece of exceptional historical significance that transcends its humble role as emergency small change.
