Description

This undated copper Civil War store card cataloged as Fuld 370H-8a features a patriotic die (PE) issued by J.W. Peirce of Michigan. The Peirce spelling (rather than Pierce) was a common variant in the nineteenth century. J.W. Peirce's patriotic token expressed Michigan's strong Union sentiment while serving as emergency commercial currency. Michigan contributed approximately 90,000 soldiers to the Union army from a total population of about 750,000, one of the highest per-capita contributions of any state. The 370H Fuld series designates a specific Michigan locality, and the copper "8a" combination identifies this particular die pairing. Michigan's lumbering, mining, and agricultural industries all depended on the circulation of small-denomination currency for daily commerce, making the coinage shortage particularly disruptive to the state's economy.
