Description
This undated copper Civil War store card cataloged as Fuld 165FXa-7a features a patriotic die (PE) associated with the Steamer Lancaster of Ohio. This is a different die combination from the Fuld 165FXa-6a variety, demonstrating how multiple token varieties were created for the same issuer by pairing different dies. The Steamer Lancaster operated on Ohio's waterways during the Civil War, a period when river transportation was critical to the Union war effort for moving troops, munitions, and supplies. Steamboat operators issued tokens that circulated both aboard their vessels and in the port communities they served. The copper composition and patriotic die imagery made these tokens indistinguishable in size and appearance from the standard Civil War patriotic tokens that flooded circulation during the coinage emergency of 1862-1864.
