Description

This undated brass Civil War store card cataloged as Fuld 150AN-1b features a patriotic die (PE) issued by G.R. Meyer of Illinois. Illinois was one of the most important Union states during the Civil War, providing hundreds of thousands of troops and serving as the home state of President Abraham Lincoln. G.R. Meyer's patriotic token combined an expression of Union loyalty with advertising for his business, a dual purpose that made Civil War store cards both commercial and political statements. The brass composition distinguished this piece from copper versions. Illinois Civil War tokens are well documented in the Fuld catalog, with merchants from Chicago, Springfield, and smaller communities all represented among the state's diverse token issues. These pieces circulated as cent substitutes when federal small change could not be obtained.
