Description

This undated brass Civil War store card cataloged as Fuld 10H-2b features a patriotic die (PE) issued by D.L. Wing & Company of New York. D.L. Wing was a merchant whose tokens circulated as substitute currency in New York during the Civil War coinage shortage. The brass composition distinguished this piece from copper versions, and the "b" suffix in the Fuld number specifically designates the brass metal variety. New York was the center of Civil War token production, with the city's die sinkers — particularly John Stanton, George Lovett, and William Bridgens — producing the majority of the estimated twenty-five million Civil War tokens struck between 1862 and 1864. The patriotic die combined with a merchant's name made these tokens both expressions of loyalty and advertisements for local businesses.
