Description
Civil War store card cataloged as Fuld NL-31b in the Location Unknown section. Designated "NL" (Not Listed) in the Fuld catalog, this token falls outside the standard numbering system for Civil War store cards. Such pieces may be recent discoveries, previously uncataloged die combinations, or tokens that defy standard classification. The brass composition produced a distinctive warm golden tone. Brass was sourced primarily from the Waterbury, Connecticut mills that supplied many Northern token manufacturers. Although undated, this token was manufactured during the 1862-1864 period when private tokens circulated as emergency currency. These privately manufactured tokens served as emergency coinage when federal cents disappeared from commerce due to wartime hoarding. New York City produced over half of all Civil War tokens, with additional output from Waterbury, Connecticut (center of the brass industry) and Cincinnati, Ohio.
