Designated "NL" (Not Listed) in the Fuld catalog, this token falls outside the standard numbering system for Civil War store cards. The brass composition produced a distinctive warm golden tone. Brass was sourced primarily from the Waterbury, Connecticut mills that supplied many Northern token manufacturers. This undated piece was produced circa 1862-1864 during the wartime coin shortage. These privately manufactured tokens served as emergency coinage when federal cents disappeared from commerce due to wartime hoarding. Civil War tokens circulated freely throughout the Northern states from mid-1862 through 1864. Merchants accepted them alongside genuine federal cents, and many show heavy wear from commerce.
