Description
Civil War store card issued by Plastic A.P. Ware & Co. of Massachusetts. Massachusetts was a center of manufacturing and abolitionist sentiment, with Boston and surrounding cities contributing Civil War tokens as emergency currency. This undated token was struck circa 1862-1864 during the wartime coin shortage. Die sinkers offered several metals; copper was the most used, and silver strikings were made for collectors. Civil War tokens addressed a practical problem: the wartime disappearance of federal small change made daily transactions nearly impossible without private substitutes. Collectors bought Civil War tokens even while they circulated, so numismatic strikes often survive in high grades.
