(No Date) Civil War Store Card F-700G-3j, RH
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Civil War store card from the Fuld 700G-3j series, attributed to the unidentified issuer "RH." The Fuld 700 "RH" series represents one of the most extensive unidentified issuer groups in the Civil War store card catalog. The initials "RH" appear on tokens struck in numerous die combinations and metals, suggesting commercial-scale production during the 1862-1864 coin shortage. German silver strikings are sought after for their distinctive bright appearance and relative scarcity compared to copper or brass versions. This undated piece was produced circa 1862-1864 during the wartime coin shortage. Civil War tokens circulated freely throughout the Northern states from mid-1862 through 1864. Some token dies were used so extensively that late strikes show significant die wear, providing collectors with a chronological sequence of the production run from fresh to deteriorated states. Merchants accepted them alongside genuine federal cents, and many show heavy wear from commerce.
Rarity Notes
German silver (a copper-nickel-zinc alloy) strikings are less common than copper or brass versions and are sought after for their distinctive silvery appearance. With 18 cataloged varieties, City Fruit Store was a notable token issuer.
