Description

Civil War store card from the Fuld 700G-1e series, attributed to the unidentified issuer "RH." Cataloged in the Fuld 700 series under the Location Unknown section, this token bears the initials "RH" as its sole issuer identification. The identity of "RH" remains unconfirmed, though the prolific number of varieties indicates a die sinker or wholesale distributor rather than a retail merchant. Struck in white metal (a tin-based alloy), a scarce composition. Surviving white metal examples often show more wear than copper or brass counterparts due to the soft metal. This undated piece was produced circa 1862-1864 during the wartime coin shortage. New York City produced over half of all Civil War tokens, with additional output from Waterbury, Connecticut (center of the brass industry) and Cincinnati, Ohio.

Rarity Notes

White metal (tin alloy) strikings are less common than copper or brass versions and tend to show more wear due to the softness of the alloy. With 18 cataloged varieties, City Fruit Store was a notable token issuer.
