(No Date) Civil War Store Card F-700G-1b, RH
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Civil War store card from the Fuld 700G-1b series, attributed to the unidentified issuer "RH." Assigned to the Fuld 700 "RH" series, a large group of Civil War store cards whose issuer remains unidentified. The scope of the series — spanning many die pairings and metal variants — points to a professional token manufacturer rather than an individual retail merchant. The brass composition produced a distinctive warm golden tone. Brass was sourced primarily from the Waterbury, Connecticut mills that supplied many Northern token manufacturers. The absence of a date is common for Civil War tokens, which were produced during the 1862-1864 coin shortage era. The end of the token era came in 1864 when Congress authorized new small-denomination currency and criminalized private token production. Surviving specimens are tangible artifacts of wartime monetary history.
Rarity Notes
Brass strikings are among the more available metal variants, though typically less common than copper. With 18 cataloged varieties, City Fruit Store was a notable token issuer.
