(No Date) Civil War Store Card F-510AA-5c, WI
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Store card of A. Miller & Co. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, struck during the 1862-1864 token era. Milwaukee's thriving German-American merchant community made it the center of Wisconsin's Civil War token production. The 14 cataloged varieties for A. Miller & Co. indicate a notable level of token production. The nickel composition of this variety (Fuld 510AA-5c) is scarce for this merchant. This undated token was struck circa 1862-1864 during the wartime coin shortage. Die sinkers offered merchants a choice of metals, with copper being cheapest and most common, while silver and gold were struck for collectors. Private tokens entered circulation after the suspension of specie payments in late 1861 drained small change from commerce. Nickel tokens were produced in smaller quantities than the standard copper issues. After Congress banned private coinage in 1864, surviving tokens became instant collectibles, with serious collecting beginning within a decade of the war's end.
Rarity Notes
Nickel strikings are generally scarcer than copper or brass versions, as nickel was more expensive and harder to strike. With 14 cataloged varieties, A. Miller & Co. was a notable token issuer.
