Description
Civil War store card from Kentucky, cataloged as Fuld 510A-9FO. Kentucky was a critical border state maintaining Union loyalty while deeply divided. Louisville served as a major supply depot and source of merchant tokens. This piece is an overstrike struck over a host coin, an 1863 Indian Head cent. Traces of the original design may be visible beneath the new impressions. This undated token was struck circa 1862-1864 during the wartime coin shortage. Die sinkers offered several metals; copper was the most used, and silver strikings were made for collectors. The token era ended in 1864, when Congress authorized a bronze cent and two-cent piece and outlawed private tokens. Collectors bought Civil War tokens even while they circulated, so numismatic strikes often survive in high grades.
