(No Date) Civil War Store Card F-460X-2D, IN
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Civil War store card issued by Weaver & Maguire of Indianapolis, Indiana. Indianapolis served as a major Union military staging area, with Camp Morton housing Confederate prisoners and Governor Morton directing one of the war's most vigorous state efforts. Weaver & Maguire issued 6 die varieties, more than most Civil War merchants. Struck in copper-nickel, this die combination (Fuld 460X-2D) is somewhat scarce. This undated piece entered commerce during the 1862-1864 period when millions of private tokens replaced vanished federal coinage. The dies for merchant tokens were usually cut by professional engravers who could produce a complete set in a matter of days. Store cards circulated as emergency currency after wartime hoarding removed federal coins from commercial channels. Copper-nickel strikings are moderately scarce, resembling the federal Indian Head cent in both size and color.
Rarity Notes
Copper-nickel strikings are moderately scarce compared to pure copper or brass versions. With 6 cataloged varieties, Weaver & Maguire was a minor token issuer.
