(No Date) Civil War Store Card F-410B-1d, WI
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Civil War store card issued by Emigranten Office of Wisconsin. Wisconsin was a growing frontier state with Milwaukee as its largest commercial center, and its merchants issued tokens as practical solutions to the coin shortage. With 2 known varieties, Emigranten Office produced a modest number of token types. This copper-nickel striking (Fuld 410B-1d) is somewhat scarce among the known varieties. Most Civil War store cards carry no date; this token was struck during the 1862-1864 coin shortage era. Merchants typically ordered tokens from die-sinkers who maintained inventories of patriotic and advertising dies for rapid production. Store cards circulated as emergency currency after wartime hoarding removed federal coins from commercial channels. Copper-nickel strikings are moderately scarce, resembling the federal Indian Head cent in both size and color.
Rarity Notes
Copper-nickel strikings are moderately scarce compared to pure copper or brass versions. With 2 cataloged varieties, Emigranten Office was a limited producer of Civil War tokens.
