Description
Civil War store card from Indiana, cataloged as Fuld 320A-2B. Hoosier merchants in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and smaller towns issued Civil War tokens reflecting Indiana's diverse commercial landscape. Although undated, this token was produced during the 1862-1864 period when federal coins disappeared from commerce. Die sinkers offered several metals; copper was the most used, and silver strikings were made for collectors. Private tokens entered circulation after the suspension of specie payments in late 1861 drained small change from commerce. Estimates of Civil War token output run from 25 million (Fuld) to about 50 million (CWTS), struck before Congress banned private tokens in 1864.
