(No Date) Civil War Store Card F-250A-2D, IN
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Merchant token from A. Jenks of Dublin, Indiana, cataloged as Fuld 250A-2D. Indiana was an important agricultural and manufacturing state, with merchants producing store cards as emergency currency when federal coinage was hoarded. A. Jenks issued 6 die varieties, more than most Civil War merchants. Struck in copper-nickel, this die combination (Fuld 250A-2D) is somewhat scarce. Although undated, this token was produced during the 1862-1864 period when federal coins disappeared from commerce. Many Civil War tokens share common reverse dies, as die sinkers paired merchant-specific obverses with stock patriotic or advertising reverses. Store cards circulated as emergency currency after wartime hoarding removed federal coins from commercial channels. Copper-nickel strikings are moderately scarce, resembling the federal Indian Head cent in both size and color.
Rarity Notes
Copper-nickel strikings are moderately scarce compared to pure copper or brass versions. With 6 cataloged varieties, A. Jenks was a minor token issuer.
