(No Date) Civil War Store Card F-150J-12C, IL
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Child's, Die Sinker & Engraver of Chicago issued this token as emergency currency during the Civil War coin shortage. Chicago's explosive growth as a railroad and commodity trading center made it Illinois' primary source of Civil War store cards. Child's, Die Sinker & Engraver produced 21 cataloged die varieties, reflecting a substantial token operation. This nickel striking (Fuld 150J-12C) is scarce among the known varieties. Undated Civil War tokens like this one circulated alongside dated issues during the 1862-1864 period. Merchants typically ordered tokens from die-sinkers who maintained inventories of patriotic and advertising dies for rapid production. Congress banned private token issuance in April 1864, but before that, tokens like this one circulated freely as cent substitutes in Northern commerce. Pure nickel pieces are harder to strike than copper, contributing to their relative scarcity.
Rarity Notes
Nickel strikings are generally scarcer than copper or brass versions, as nickel was more expensive and harder to strike. With 21 cataloged varieties, Child's, Die Sinker & Engraver was a moderately active token issuer.
