Description
Civil War store card from Kansas, cataloged as Fuld 150D-4B. Kansas had been "Bleeding Kansas" in the 1850s slavery debate and was strongly Unionist. Although undated, this token was produced during the 1862-1864 period when federal coins disappeared from commerce. Die sinkers offered several metals; copper was the most used, and silver strikings were made for collectors. The token era ended in 1864, when Congress authorized a bronze cent and two-cent piece and outlawed private tokens. Collectors were buying Civil War tokens from the makers during the war itself, including rare die pairings and off-metal strikes.
