Description

The undated Mormon Two-and-a-Half Dollar uniface lead reverse restrike preserves the reverse die of the Deseret Mint quarter eagle in soft lead. Lead's exceptional malleability allows it to record even the finest die details, making this piece an important numismatic document of the Mormon territorial coinage. The reverse bears the clasped hands that appear across all denominations of the series, representing the covenantal handshake central to Latter-day Saint religious practice. The inscription "PURE GOLD" served as an assurance of metallic content — though contemporary assays would ultimately challenge this claim. Lead reverse restrikes complement the obverse lead impressions in providing a complete die record of the Mormon quarter eagle. Together, these uniface pieces document both sides of a denomination that is extremely rare in its original gold form, with fewer than two dozen gold examples surviving.

Rarity Notes

Extremely rare. Lead reverse impressions of the Mormon quarter eagle dies are among the rarest pieces in the restrike series.
