Description

The undated Mormon Gold Piece uniface silver reverse gilt restrike is among the most exotic composition variants in the entire Mormon restrike series. This piece combines a silver planchet with a gilt (gold-washed) surface, creating a presentation-quality impression that closely simulates the appearance of the original gold coinage. The silver substrate provides a harder, more durable base than lead while accepting die details with greater fidelity than copper. The gilt surface treatment adds a layer of gold that gives the piece the warm yellow appearance of the original five-dollar gold coins. The combination of silver and gilding represents the most elaborate preparation of any Mormon restrike composition. This silver gilt reverse impression displays the clasped hands, "PURE GOLD," and "FIVE DOLLARS" with exceptional visual impact. The contrast between the golden surface and any areas where the gilding has worn through to reveal the silver beneath creates a distinctive appearance that distinguishes these pieces from all other restrike varieties.

Rarity Notes

Extremely rare. Silver gilt Mormon restrikes are among the rarest and most desirable composition variants, with only a handful of known survivors.
