ND Mormon Five Dollar - Uniface Copper Reverse, K-8a, Plain Edge Restrike
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The undated Mormon Five Dollar uniface copper reverse restrike with Kagin K-8a designation and plain edge represents one of the latest documented die states in the Mormon half eagle restrike sequence. The K-8a attribution places this piece near the end of the die’s productive history. At the K-8a die state, the reverse die shows the cumulative effects of decades of intermittent restrike use. The clasped hands design, "PURE GOLD" inscription, and "FIVE DOLLARS" denomination remain identifiable, but details have softened through progressive die wear. Any die cracks, rust pitting, or surface deterioration present at this advanced state serve as diagnostic markers. The high Kagin numbers in the Mormon series — K-7, K-8, and their sub-varieties — correspond to the final chapter in the physical life of the original Deseret Mint dies. Each successive restrike production pushed the dies further, and the copper impressions from these late states document the gradual decline of dies that had already far exceeded their intended working life.
Rarity Notes
Rare. Late-state K-8a restrikes are among the scarcest cataloged varieties, with very few documented examples.
