Description

The undated Mormon Five Dollar uniface copper reverse restrike with Kagin K-7a designation and plain edge is a later die state variety from the Mormon half eagle reverse die. The K-7a suffix "a" in Kagin's system denotes a sub-variety distinguished by subtle die characteristics — a crack, progressive rust, or surface anomaly that developed during the restrike production at the K-7 die state. By the K-7 point in the die's history, the reverse shows accumulated evidence of extended use: progressive wear on the high points of the clasped hands, potential die fatigue lines, and developing rust pitting in the fields. These features help researchers establish the relative chronology of Mormon restrike production. The K-7a reverse is significant because it documents a late stage in the die's working life. Combined with the K-7a obverse (if one exists at this state), it provides evidence of how far the original Deseret Mint dies were pushed beyond their initial service life.

Rarity Notes

Very rare. The K-7a sub-variety is among the scarcer late-state restrikes, with fewer than 10 examples recorded.
